UNIVERSITY OF STUTTGART
FOYER
ARCHITECTUR-
BUILDING

Under the title "china informal", the study trip focuses on traditional and contemporary Chinese architecture and landscape architecture as well as new forms of participation in public space.

As part of the excursion to Beijing and Shanghai, different forms of dealing with public spaces are documented. Selected locations were analysed using drawings and photographs. In addition, interviews with participants were also conducted.

Researchers and students from the CAFA Beijing (Central Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Department of Landscape Architecture) have supported the selection of suitable locations, the inclusion of planning law issues and dealing with the authorities. The on-site investigations were conducted in mixed teams of Chinese and German students. The joint work provides important points of reference for the subsequent reflection and discussion of the impressions gained together.

The study is embedded in a framework programme that includes important urban spaces in Beijing and Shanghai.

These include traditional sites such as the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven Park, but also contemporary urban development projects such as the Olympic Park, the 798 Art District, the artists' colony of the artist Ai Wei Wei in Caochangdi and the Sanlitun business district. Site and project visits serve to deepen knowledge of the traditions and culture of the host country. At the same time, the impact of the rapid urban development of Beijing and Shanghai can be better categorised against this background.

Over the course of the semester, analogue and digital working techniques and their combination were trained.
