Public spaces in Vietnamese cities are often at the same time spaces of work:

  • as a transshipment point for food, textiles and electrical appliances
  • as a location for services such as restaurants and workshops
  • as well as space for activities that cannot be carried out in the adjoining apartments due to lack of space. These include washing, cooking and eating.

The study records temporary uses of public space. Three alleys in the old town of Hanois were chosen for this purpose. The study area is located near the Long Biên Bridge.

The uses described often take place with a time delay on the same area. Accordingly, the rooms were observed and documented over 24 hours. External street traders and private use were also taken into account in the types of use during the course of the day.

The results of the investigation were recorded graphically and in text form. In addition to a personal experience protocol, this includes sections, views and perspectives for each lane at three different points in time.

In the introduction, the concept of public space from a European and Vietnamese point of view is presented on the basis of selected theories. This understanding is critically reflected on the basis of existing appropriation practice.
